spoons are a very utilitarian tool, meant for eating, but with their design,
japanese studio nendo has created something that also adds some visual fun to the
kitchen landscape when not in use for ICHIBANYA.

typically used individually, nendo’s ‘forest spoon’ develops a new relationship between
the eating utensil when brought together in multiples. when lying down as one piece,
‘forest spoon’ looks like a single tree. when grouped as multiples in a bowl, cup or simply laid on the counter,
the spoons form a little forest.

mimicking both the form and function of the traditional clothes peg,
the re-interpreted object secures itself to the side of a pot where it twists
and bends to accommodate the organically growing vegetation.

the clothes pegs are handcrafted from wood and are available in a variety
of shapes and sizes, allowing them to suspend other precious objects as well.

This is a great design project because a) it incorporates recycling, b) it’s a useful product, and c) the design addresses and corrects the flaws of earlier generations of the same product.

Shibuya-based Naruse-Inokama Architects, comprised of Jun Inokuma and Yuri Naruse, takes wood waste from houses and turns that into paper. The resultant paper is then formed into a stack of Post-It-like sticky notes that are in turn shaped like little houses. (They’re called IE-TAGs as “ie” is Japanese for “house.”) And as anyone who’s ever seen a thick book loaded up with Post-It bookmarks can attest, the corners of the Post-Its get dog-eared like nobody’s business. The resultant mess could hardly be called aesthetically pleasing.

The house shape of NIA’s sticky notes, on the other hand, get rid of the corners altogether. I do wonder how they’ll hold up if the book is, say, thrown into a crowded bookbag, and I’m curious enough to try ‘em if someone would kindly start selling these at a store near me. (Muji, get on these!)

British artist Jeremy Mays crafts his visually arresting rings, bracelets, and necklaces from the pages of dusty old tomes, each replete with its own personal history and significance. Diehard bibliophiles may grimace at the premeditated mutilation of many a fine volume, but you can’t help but be impressed by the glossy, finely sculpted gem that is the end result.
